29th World Othello Championship in Reykjavik

The official site for the 29th Annual World Othello Championship will be the Hotel Loftleidir in Reykjavik, Iceland on November 10 - November 12, 2005.

The Tournament will be hosted by Anjar Co., MegaHouse Corporation and Ísöld (Icelandic Othello publisher). The Tournament Director will be Benkt Steentoft, (see Benkt's biography below).

The Hotel Loftleidir is centrally located and is perfectly suited for the WOC. We will enjoy the Conference facilities for the actual tournament play. In addition to its beautiful facilities, it is only a short distance from Reykjavik center, and near many restaurants, galleries, and popular nightclubs. Visit the hotel's official website for more details. For those interested in staying at this hotel, we have reserved a block of rooms at discounted prices. Please refer to the Othello Tournament when making room reservations.

In addition to the cash prizes, Trophies will be awarded to the First through Fourth Place Winners and Team Trophies will go to each member of the winning country. The Champion will have his or her name permanently inscribed in the rotating Othello Trophy, alongside the previous 28 World Othello Champs.

The Welcome Reception will be held at the Hotel Loftleidir on Wednesday, November 9th from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM. In keeping with tradition, first round pairings will be drawn at the Reception.

Lunch will be served at the Tournament Site for all players and guests on Thursday, November 10th and Friday, November 11th and on Saturday, November 12th for finalists and working staff.

Anjar recommends Expedia.com for the least expensive and most convenient way to book your stay in Reykjavik. Use the form below to make air, hotel and car reservations at the best prices currently available. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Benkt Steentoft.

Tournament Director

Benkt Steentoft, will direct the 29th World Othello Championship in Reykjavik.

Benkt has played Othello since 1986, and represented Sweden in the 2001 WOC in New York, and he was Tournament Director 27th World Othello Championship in Stockholm. He's devoted himself to spreading Othello to new players, and he spends a great deal of time doing so.

In addition to Othello, he works as a personal assistant. Benkt enjoys good food (especially gourmet cheeses), games, poetry, Psychobilly Music, as well as spending time with his family and friends. He lives in a rather large family of seven, which consists of 5 children besides Benkt and his girlfriend.  The newest member, a baby girl, was born in January 2005 and is the first child he and his girlfriend have in common

Benkt will be assisted by Henry Aspenryd who is 34 years old and works as a system architect. Henry has played Othello activley for two and a half years, and has a been table referee at WOC 2003 and WOC 2004, TA at EGP 2005 and TD at a couple of minor tournaments. His best merit is a
4th place at Stockholm EGP 2004.

If you plan to attend the 29th World Othello Championship Tournament as a player or a table referee, please contact Benkt Steentoft at email.
